Day 422

Isn't this the most ridiculously awesome name for a juice drink? Good Belly.

The antibiotics the doctor gave me are screwing with my stomach, so he reccomended eating foods with probiotics in them, and I can only eat so much yogurt, you know? This stuff isn't too bad. It weirds me out that I'm drinking like, a bazillion little living organisms.... I try not to think of it that way.

Books are for lovers.

Day 420

I think I may have finally gotten my pumpkin "pupcake" recipe right! I've been trying different variations over the last few weeks. Our dogs have loved it so much, I wanted to share it!

Originally I made this cake for Boone's birthday, but he and our other dogs loved it so much, we've been making it about once a week for them. Pumpkin is actually very very good for dogs and most of them will love the taste, it will act as a great dietary supplement if they're lacking fiber.

What you'll need:
2 Cups White Rice Flour (do NOT use brown rice flour, it is too tough on a dog's tummy)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 can (15oz) of organic pumpkin (not the crud you use for pie with spices in it around Thanksgiving, just normal, 100% pumpkin in a can. You can get this at Whole Foods year round.)
3/4 cup to 1 cup water
2 eggs
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon molasses

1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Mix all your dry ingredients together (rice flour, baking powder, and baking soda)
3. Beat both eggs into your dry ingredients with a spatula.
4. Add oil, water and molasses.
5. Mix. Depending on the consistency of your batter, you may want to add 1/4 cup more water. I always start out with 3/4 cup and add more if necessary, depending on how juicy my can of pumpkin was.

6. Once you've incorporated all your ingredients, the batter should look exactly like a normal cake batter. Spread into a greased pan (13x9 or 8x8, depending on how thick you want your treats to be)

=)

7. Cook in your 375 degree oven for 25-35 minutes, or until a tooth pick comes out clean.

7. Ta da! You're done! The outside will appear VERY dry no matter what you do, but the inside will be dense and moist. If you're really wanting to spoil your pup, put some cottage cheese "frosting" on the top of an individual slice before serving.

Special Notes- If your local organic market is out of canned pumpkin, you can also use organic butternut squash, or mash up approximately 5 bananas and use that instead! Also you don't have to add molasses if you don't want to. You can use honey instead, or leave the "Sweetener" out entirely. I choose not to fool with honey at all, given that you cannot serve it to puppies or babies since (even when cooked) it can be prone to growing harmful bacteria that young ones are susceptible to. But it's your choice.

I hope you all enjoy this recipe! I'm still tweaking it and experimenting myself, so if you find something that works better, let me know! =)

Day 419

I am sooo lame. Of course my wound would get infected. I'm sure it's because I didn't immediately wash it out, but yeah. Here's the scoop:

When I went to work today, I felt totally fine, but I was really really warm. Like, so warm I had the AC on in my car at 8am as I was driving to work, and it was 60 degrees outside. It got worse when I went into the office. I attributed it to the warm office (the temperature can be fickle sometimes) Since no one else was complaining though, I wondered if our med kit had some disposable thermometers, which it did! The Doc at urgent care told me to watch for a fever as it might be a sign of rabies, so I thought I should check it, just to get some peace of mind. The reading freaked me out though, 101.3.

I called my doctor and they said I should come in ASAP.

This is how I feel about being in the exam room. Bleh
.
So, I left work. I wanted to come back after my appointment, but they released me so late and the doctor said I should just chill out since the infection was obviously trying to work itself out.

The amount of time I had to spend in the exam room was insane. They put me in there at 11:20am, and I got released at like... 1pm?
I haaaaaaate missing work when it's unscheduled, but there's not much I could do :( Blah. Oh well, back tomorrow!

Anyway, the doc checked my wound, my temperature... he said that based on the heat the wound was giving off, the fact I had a high fever, and just the look of it, meant it was infected. Oh joy! I've got some intense antibiotics prescribed that I have to take for a week. I don't have rabies, which is what I was really freaked out about (they're not gonna have to take me out behind the corn crib and shoot me!).

Kind of a weird, discombobulated day.

Day 417

I was looking forward to an easy-going day today. I didn't have any plans, it was beautiful outside. So I woke up at 9am, loved the fact that I was able to sleep in, and Boone and I headed to the dog park for a morning of fun!

...Yeah, that didn't really happen though. Long story short, I ended up being bitten by a dog at the dog park this morning. I got between this dog when he wouldn't stop lunging at Boone.

Boone was over at his water dish, minding his own business, when this german shepard/lab(?) mix came up and wanted to drink out of it, too. Now, I don't allow this because this is how dog diseases are spread. This same dog had actually attacked a golden retriever about half an hour earlier, so I was watching it very carefully. I decided not to fuck with it given what I had seen earlier.

Boone stopped drinking and just kinda looked at the dog, wasn't growling, wasn't barking, but the german shepard didn't like something that either Boone or I did, and so he started attacking Boone. Boone doesn't back down from fights, so I pulled him away immediately, and he was fine and wasn't retaliating at all.

However the german shepard kept coming at Boone, and me. Probably for a good 30 seconds I stood, bent over, blocking this dog with my body to keep him away from Boone. The owner, did nothing until I started SCREAMING at him to take his dog away. His dog then jumped up, trying to lunge at Boone, and bit me instead!

It didn't really hurt, but holy crap did it bleed at lot! I was so high on adrenaline all I could think to do was to get the guy's name and phone number. I called the non emergency line after he left, after some patrons of the park told me that he had been there before with his dog, and that every time that dog causes trouble. I usually don't go to the park on Saturday morning's, at least not that early, so after talking with people, I figured it was probably smart to report it to the police. It's not so much that the dog attacked Boone, or me, honestly. I think the dogs probably would have worked it out themselves. But the fact that the owner stood there watching as I struggled and tried to separate his dog from mine, when his dog was deliberately causing the problem, that is not ok. Boone is not an aggressive dog, but he won't back down from a fight if someone starts one, which is why I'm always ready to jump in if something goes wrong. The fact that this man wasn't willing, or smart enough, to do the same, means he shouldn't be at the park.

I had to be talked into going to urgent care. The bite looked a lot worse than it felt (seriously). Although, by Noon, when a doctor finally saw me, my arm was pretty sore and the actual spot where skin had been broken was starting to burn pretty bad, so I was glad to have been checked out. My blood pressure was really high (they said it was on par with people who had been in car accidents/attacks/dog bites) so that wasn't great. Had to get a tetanus shot. They're gonna watch me for rabies. I really, really hope I don't need rabies shots. That will suck.

Anyway, I'm sorry for the gory pictures today. Part of having a photo a day blog is showing you what happens in my life every day. Most days are boring and I worry about finding something interesting to show you or photograph. Today it was more a battle of "this is kinda gross, do I really want to share it?" But this is as much a blog as it is a diary to document my life, so, yeah, that's why I opted to show them.

Don't you love the ridiculous bandage the urgent care put on me? hahah.

402

My baby Boone turned 1 year old today. I wanted to make him a "pupcake" but I had to settle for an organic pumpkin bar, as that was the best recipe I could find for dogs.

I have a feeling it probably didn't taste too bad, but since I hate pumpkin, I didn't try it.

I put some cottage cheese on top to act as "frosting" and let him enjoy his cake. He loved it! I'm going to try experimenting a bit more to see if I can truly make a dog safe cake batter that actually resembles cake. This did the trick, but I think I could make improvements!

Day 396

I am so lucky that I have friends who trust me to do photos for them of their important life events.

Lindsay and I are friends through our dear friend Natalie. Linds  asked me earlier this year if I would do her wedding photos, as she's marrying her fiance Michael later this summer, and I enthusiastically said of course I would!

Naturally, engagement photos are a MUST these days, so we did a super fun urban shoot on one of the first nice summery days here in Portland.

They were such a joy to photograph! Please enjoy a few of my personal favorites =)
