Day 331

Thousand Origami Cranes (千羽鶴 Senbazuru?) is a group of one thousand origami paper cranes held together by strings. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. The crane in Japan is one of the mystical or holy creatures and is said to live for a thousand years. In Japan, it is commonly said that folding 1000 paper origami cranes makes a person's wish come true. ~Wikipedia

Over the last few days in the photographic community, there have been hundreds of pictures of cranes uploaded. Why? Sharing messages of hope and perseverance for Japan during their times of struggle after the horrible earthquake that hit two weeks ago.

I would have no clue about this if it weren't for Madeline Bea over at The Sunday Creative so thanks to her for this week's theme and for directing us all to it.

I encourage all my readers to make their own paper cranes and submit images of them to Miya Company. They are donating  $5 for each of the first 1000 crane images they receive to the Save the Children for Japan’s relief and recovery. A kind gesture for sure, I wish more companies would do something like this in times of crisis. I had never before done origami, and it was sort of frustrating during my first try, but hey, I made it work with THICK scrapbook paper. My cranes may look like loch ness monsters, but I don't think they're half bad for a first attempt.

Also, there is a facebook group that is trying to raise $200,000 by mailing paper cranes to "Students Rebuild" So once you've used your cranes for photographs and uploaded them, you can mail them off! More info here: Do Something: Students Rebuild Japan

Get better soon, Japan.

Nice origami and the cherry blossom is so pretty.

The cherry blossoms are so perfect for the pictures. The cranes look so "natural" there. Very readable too.
